Overnight Oats with Berries, Three Ways

Short answer: Stir 1/2 cup rolled oats with 3/4 cup almond milk, 1 tablespoon chia seeds and a little maple syrup in a jar, top with berries, and leave it in the fridge overnight. That's the whole method. The three versions below only change the fruit and one flavoring.

Overnight oats are about the lowest-effort breakfast there is. Five minutes the night before, and there's something ready when you open the fridge. They also scale well: make three jars on Sunday, one of each flavor, and Monday through Wednesday are covered. If you'd like something warm instead, our quinoa breakfast bowl with berries and walnuts reheats well, and the rest are on our breakfast recipes page.

Like every recipe here, this one was developed by the ElectricDiet team from standard ratios.

What you need

Not much. Any jar with a lid that holds about 2 cups is fine, though wide-mouth jars are easier to stir and eat from. A set of 16-ounce wide-mouth mason jars covers a week of breakfasts. For the oats, use old-fashioned rolled oats; a big canister of old-fashioned rolled oats lasts a long time at half a cup a jar.

The three ways

1. Blueberry lemon. The base recipe in the card below: blueberries plus the zest of half a lemon. Frozen wild blueberries work well here and turn the oats a bit purple overnight.

2. Strawberry vanilla. Swap in 1/2 cup chopped strawberries, skip the lemon, and add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Strawberries give off juice as they sit, so this one gets a little looser by morning.

3. Raspberry cocoa. Stir 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder into the oats with 2 extra tablespoons of milk, since cocoa soaks up liquid, then top with raspberries. It tastes like a not-very-sweet chocolate pudding.

Nutrition estimate

One jar of the blueberry lemon version comes out to about 310 calories, 8 g protein, 8 g fat, 54 g carbohydrate, 10 g fiber and 17 g sugar, before the pinch of salt. We worked that out from USDA FoodData Central values for each ingredient [1]. Brands vary, especially plant milks, so check your labels if you track numbers closely.

Swaps and substitutions

  • Strawberry vanilla: use 1/2 cup chopped strawberries instead of blueberries, skip the lemon zest and add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • Raspberry cocoa: stir in 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 extra tablespoons of milk, skip the lemon zest, and top with 1/2 cup raspberries.
  • For a creamier jar, swap 1/4 cup of the milk for unsweetened plant-based yogurt.
  • Oat milk or soy milk work in place of almond milk.

1 jar

Ingredients

1 serving
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk, or any plant milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tsp maple syrup, or to taste
  • salt, a small pinch
  • ½ cup blueberries, fresh or frozen; see swaps for the other two versions
  • ½ lemon, zest only

Method

  1. Add the oats, almond milk, chia seeds, maple syrup and salt to a 16-ounce jar or container and stir well, making sure no dry oats are stuck at the bottom.
  2. Stir in the lemon zest, then spoon the blueberries on top. Frozen berries can go in straight from the bag.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or overnight.
  4. In the morning, stir. If it's thicker than you like, add a splash more milk. Eat cold, or warm it in a microwave-safe bowl.

Food safety and storage

  • Keep the jars in the fridge at 40°F or below and don't leave them out for more than 2 hours.
  • We'd eat each jar within 3 to 4 days, the window USDA gives for most refrigerated leftovers.

Frequently asked questions

Which oats are best for overnight oats?

Old-fashioned rolled oats. Quick oats turn mushy overnight and steel-cut oats stay hard and chewy unless you cook them first.

What is the best liquid for overnight oats?

Any milk you like to drink. Unsweetened almond milk keeps it plant-based; oat and soy milk are a little creamier. Water works but tastes flat.

Do overnight oats need to be refrigerated?

Yes. FoodSafety.gov says to keep the fridge at 40°F or below and not to leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours. A jar that rides to work in a cool bag is fine; one left in a hot car all day isn't.

How many days ahead can I make overnight oats?

Three or four days. USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says most leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge, so make three or four jars at a time and toss any jar that smells sour.

Can I add protein powder to overnight oats?

Yes. Stir a scoop in with the dry ingredients and add about 1/4 cup more milk, since protein powder thickens everything.
